VICTORIA, QUEEN; STATUE Victoria Park; by Thomas Brock RA; unveiled 07.07.1902 by Prince Christian of Schleswig Holstein, the late Queen’s son in law. . Bronze on Aberdeen grey granite. the inscription on the front of the plinth reads Victoria, Queen of Great Britain and Ireland Empress of India born May 14th 1819 died January 22 1901 In memory of a great Queen a good woman a friend alike to rich and poor who for sixty three years reigned over a prosperous and worldwide empire. This statue is erected by the citizens of Carlisle in admiration of her noble life and character. There are four bronze reliefs, Empire, Education, Science and Art and Commerce. On 29.03.1901 a sub-committee of Carlisle City Council inspected the statue by Thomas Brock, erected to the Queen at Hove for the Diamond Jubilee. They interviewed Mr Brock with a view to obtaining a replica of the statue for Carlisle. Mr Brock agreed to accept the commission for a fee of £1,500. The cannon placed by the statue was removed in 1938. In 1945 the statue lost a hand which was not replaced. By March 1962 the monument was described as being in a shocking state, as green as the grass that surrounds her. In 1972 her left hand and orb were in storage, since restored and later still given a cover of thick brown paint

VILLA LOBORATORY Colliers lane
C.T. Cardno was the owner and George Cardno the office manager. There was an entrance to Collier’s Lane via the lane between Timpsons and Pullars Lane. Polish was boiled in large tubs on a gas ring. In circa 1944-45 tub fell over and ignited the contents. They spilled and ran into the lane and blocked drains in Botchergate when solidified. Villa Loboratory also manufactured head-ache tablets. These were called Embex. This was done on the first floor near the office. This information was authenticated by Mrs M.Tuer who worked in the Office and Mrs I.Dennnard who worked in the Factory
